October 2016 Julep Maven - Dark And Stormy Nights - Unboxing & Review!

Another month of Julep Maven! Minus when I first subscribed, I think this has been my longest streak of not skipping a month; I really appreciate Julep upgrading my subscription to be customizable, while still letting me pay the original price.
I ended up with quite a lot of products this month! Along with my three base items, I added three extra items, got a freebie item for doing so, and Julep gave everyone who got a box in October an additional special holo topcoat!
Julep Maven is a $24.99 a month nail polish/beauty/makeup subscription service from the Seattle, WA based nail salon Julep. This subscription was initially much more nail polish/nail care-centric, but Julep has come out with a wide variety of products including skin care, hair care, and makeup. All the products are from Julep and, in the subscriptions current state, you can pick around three items per box with the option of adding on additional products at a significant discount. One of the best features of this service is that it's very easy to skip a month; between the 20th and 24th of each month you can either pick the items in your box, you can chose to send the box to someone else, or you can skip it. If you don't make a selection within this time frame, Julep will send you a curated box based on your beauty profile.
Appropriately enough for October, the theme this month was Dark and Stormy Nights.
Along with a collection of dark and shimmery polishes, Julep released a new sleeping mask for October; one thing I find very interesting about Julep is that a lot of the skin care and makeup products the Julep creates are inspired by Korean beauty trends.
The quote for this month also ties into the 'night' theme, and is from Marilyn Monroe.
Every month you also get a coupon code; these aren't unique and there are normally a few variants each month, so if you don't like the one you got, you just look up what the others were.
Every so often Julep throws in a special treat for everyone and this month we all got a holographic top coat called Desiree!
Desiree is exactly as described: a scattered holo top coat.
This is one coat of Desiree swatched over China Glaze's Liquid Leather, since it was pretty much impossible to see it on its own. You get a good amount of holo without having to worrying about obscuring the base color or design. You can add more layers for more holo, but it won't ever get 100% opaque.
For my actual box, I ended up picking one polish and two body care items, then I added on another polish, another body care item, and some special effect decals, which then got me another polish for free. Whew!
The polish I picked for my base box is Ebony.
Ebony is described as a 'graphite holographic'. It looks pretty dark in the swatch and in the bottle, but once applied, it's definitely more of a charcoal grey color.
I also picked up some more Brilliance Glycolic Hand Scrub! Well, I shouldn't say 'more', since the other scrub I got was the hand and body scrub, but I don't think there's much difference besides packaging and price. I had a bit of a mishap with my other bottle where it ended up getting moldy in the cap (not the product itself, but water got stuck in the cap and ended up getting gross), so I'm going to make sure to be more careful with this tube (it also has a different lid where you have to twist it open instead of flipping it, so I think it's less likely to trap water).
The last product I got as part of my actual box is the Rethink Your Shower Hydrating Body Cleansing Oil. While I am used to cleaning my face with oil (I do it every day as part of my nighttime dual cleanse), I've never used it to clean my body before. I thought this was a very intriguing product, especially for the winter months, since regular soap can be incredibly drying. I am a little worried that it might make the shower extra slippery, but we do have a grippy mat and I think if I don't use too much of it, it shouldn't be problem.
To go along with my cleansing body oil, I got a Body Konjac Sponge! Again, konjac sponges aren't new to me, but I've only ever used them on my face, never my body. I don't know why using these type of products aren't more popular; after all, wouldn't it make sense to use the same method to clean your body as you do to clean your face (though the other way around wouldn't work so well)? Julep is one of the only companies that I've seen package their konjac sponges wet; most others are bone dry. I'm not sure what the difference is, but if you do purchase one of these from Julep, don't be alarmed if it's damp.
Somewhat spoiled in the image above, I added on the Wonder Maven polish, Kris!
Kris is described as an 'arctic iridescent chrome', and it's kind of like an opaque metallic silver flakie glitter polish. It isn't quite as dimensional as I was hoping, but it's pretty.
The last item I added on (in order to get an extra freebie) was a sheet of 3D pearl nail decals. My sheet arrived a little messed up, but I think all the pearls are still usable, so it's not a big deal. I don't often use decals and charms in my nail art, but these make it especially easy since they're flat on the back and they're already slightly sticky.
Because I got three add-ons, I got an extra freebie! I believe everyone gets the same freebie each month, which is nice since then people don't feel like they got 'cheated' out of a higher value freebie. This month is was a polish in the color Colton.
Julep doesn't always give polishes as the freebie, but more often than not they do. Since I already have so much Julep polish (and other polish...), I always hope it will be a different type of product, but hey, it's free!
Colton is described as a 'black iris crème' and, since I couldn't remember if I already owned this polish or not, I decided to not swatch it (I don't think I do have this color, though I did do a recent polish declutter, so I may have owned it and got rid of it without even knowing!).

Overall, I'm very happy with my Julep Maven box for October! You may be wondering why I am just posting about an October box in December; I started writing this early November, and I am finally finishing it today, December 10th. I ended up skipping posting anything in November due to some health issues and a busy schedule, but I hope to get things started up again come January! Sorry for this quick wrap-up, but I really want to get this posted and start getting my blog back on track.

Thanks for reading! <3
